About Paint the Town Pink
It takes a village to achieve the mission of Paint the Town Pink. And, every year, that village has grown with more towns and even more supporters helping us to encourage women, ages 40 and older, to have their annual mammogram.
Historically, our annual event merged a breast cancer prevention, detection, and treatment campaign with a fundraising component that raised funds to provide free screening mammography through the Pink Fund for uninsured and underserved women in the community. Now, we are asking women to take it a step further and care for their overall well-being. Breast health is so important, but it is only a part of ones well-being and whole self. There are so many big and small actions one could take to improve their state of well-being and overall health. So this year when scheduling a mammogram, include an annual wellness visit and an annual gynecological visit and also commit to one positive change – whether that change be to walk more to improve heart health or be more mindful of the relationship one may have with food and being more aware of the foods one puts in their body.
Now, we are asking you harness that Pink Power and Pink On!
Paint the Town Pink is a communitywide effort presented by Hackensack Meridian Health to raise awareness of the importance of annual mammography and women’s wellness.
Encourage all women in our community, aged 40 and older, to have their annual mammogram; to remind women to continue to put wellness first in their lives; make a difference in the lives of women in our community
Why We Do It:
Early detection is a woman’s best defense against breast cancer.
How We Do It:
As a member of the community, we have the unique opportunity to integrate an important message into a woman’s daily routine as she shops and dines at the many businesses in our pink towns. For the entire month of May, as women visit our Pink Partners they are able to pledge to have their annual mammogram and commit to a positive change in their lives.
This event is a true collaboration between Hackensack Meridian Health and our surrounding towns. We thank our Pink Towns and our dedicated committees for adding to the special nature of “Pink.”
In 2006, in a somewhat small and cramped Riverview Medical Center office, it came to someone’s attention that despite all the medical advances and the media attention paid to breast cancer, the number of women having annual mammograms was shockingly low. Armed with this disheartening statistic, a team of volunteers set out on a mission to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, annual screenings, prevention and treatment. Our team was intent upon spreading the word about how important early detection and screening are to saving lives. The team adopted the mantra: “early detection is a woman’s best defense against breast cancer.”
Each year our pink footprint has expanded making the event even bigger. Since 2007 we have ‘pinkified’ 58 towns in 3 different counties within New Jersey.
Why We Do It
Each and every year, dozens of volunteers get together right after the New Year to begin to set the framework for the May ahead. The volunteers of the Pink committee are the backbone of Paint the Town Pink and make this week-long event a reality. Every committee member is involved for a very personal reason, each with a unique story. One of those stories is of Sally Harris of Ocean Grove. Sally has been volunteering her time to the Pink committee since year one in 2007, but more importantly, every year of Paint the Town Pink is also another year that Sally celebrates being cancer free.
Meridian Cancer Care
Imagine being told you have cancer. Imagine the fear, worry and confusion about what lies ahead. Imagine trying to figure out multiple physician appointments and how you’ll manage travel to and from treatments, while trying to maintain some level of routine for your family.
Now imagine a sense of calm as a team gathers around you. It’s a team that makes you the focus of their efforts. It’s a team that provides care that is trusted, convenient, and comprehensive. It’s a team that guides you, cares for you, nurtures you, and heals you. It’s a team that builds hope for you, and with you, every step of the way.
This is the team that you will find at Meridian Health. It’s the team that has been with your family as they’ve welcomed a child into the world. It’s the team that has rendered care during an emergency. It’s the team that has enriched your life during wellness, and nursed you back to health during illness.
This is the team that has professional and personal roots in the community, and knows what’s important to patients. It’s the team that offers a home-team advantage that is second to none, and is about to take cancer care to a whole new level in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
